Who is RCIA for?

• Adults 18 years and older seeking to become fully initiated Catholics.

• Children/youth aged 7-17 who need initiation (see RCIA for Children/Youth).

Everything must be based on the name on your birth or baptismal certificate without exception. Proper documentation and records are essential, especially if an annulment is involved.

Sacramental Preparation Includes:

• Adult First Communion & Confirmation

• Marriage Formation (only if missing a sacrament)

• Convalidation (Catholic recognition of civil marriages)

Inquiry / Investigación

People explore faith, share their stories, ask questions, and pray with the community — no commitment necessary at this stage.

Rite of Welcoming/Acceptance / Rito de Bienvenida-Aceptación

When ready, the person is publicly welcomed at a Sunday Mass and is assigned a sponsor to guide them in faith.

Catechumenate / Catecumenado

A period of faith formation and community involvement, usually about one year, where the person learns about Christ and the Catholic faith.

Rite of Sending / Rito de Envío

Just before Lent, readiness to receive sacraments is discerned, and the candidate is presented to the pastor.

Rite of Election / Rito de Elección

Candidates are welcomed by the Bishop and the Church at a diocesan ceremony, usually the First Sunday of Lent.

Period of Enlightenment / Período de Iluminación

Lent becomes a time of spiritual preparation through prayer and reflection for baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist.

Celebration of Sacraments of Initiation / Celebración de los Sacramentos de Iniciación

At the Easter Vigil, candidates receive Baptism (if needed), Confirmation, and First Communion, fully joining the Church.

Mystagogy / Mistagogía

After Easter, new Catholics continue to grow in faith by sharing experiences and discerning ways to contribute to the Church community.

RCIA Support Team / Equipo de Apoyo RICA

The RCIA team offers prayer, encouragement, and guidance to those on the journey to becoming Catholic. Sponsors and team members support candidates by sharing their faith and offering practical help throughout the process.
